Slow PC in FaD

Well, I got the office all up and running on FaD yesterday except for the two Celeron 333's and I didn't even want to bother with those. :p

All of the PCs seem to be running pretty much just how I expected them to except for one. I have a Celeron 1.7 Ghz that 'feels' quick under normal use but it is only getting a CPU rating of 42 from FADSpy. I have run complete virus and spyware scans on the computer and nothing at all has been running on the PC since I set it up with FaD except MS Outlook. Outlook has just been sitting idle pretty much the whole time but this particular PC belongs to the boss at the office and because of some of the stuff that is sent to him by clients he wants to have Outlook open all the time.

The THINK.EXE process is getting 98-99% of the processor time and SiSoft Sandra gives appropriate scores for a 1.7 Ghz processor. Any ideas why this computer would be getting such a low rating in FaD?

Can't tell you why, but my sons p3 800 gets a rating of 46 so you're right, there's something wrong somewhere :(

That is truly bizarre... I've not heard of that before. Hopefully someone else has some insight... mondobyte may be able to chime in here...

I can't help you but I can say that I have a Celeron 1.7 running WinXP that gets an average CPU rating of 95, so something is up with that system.

Try looking at task manager again when Outlook "has focus" (which means it's the selected, top window). Focus can have a surprising effect on the percentages in Task Manager.

Even while typing, spell-checking, sending/receiving, etc., Outlook never takes more than 5-10% of the CPU. With it sitting as the 'focused' application and doing nothing at all, Outlook hasn't gone above 1% CPU usage while I have been watching it. The THINK process has been taking all of the rest of the CPU cycles regardless of what Outlook is doing, so even at 10% usage for Outlook during the peak times FaD should be doing better that it is...

At first I thought it might have been one a process that was shutting itself off or hiding itself whenever the Task Manager was open, but I left the Task Manager open in the background for four hours and it didn't seem to make any difference in the rating that FaD was getting. It's very strange. Normally I wouldn't worry too much about it since the computer does appear to be working normally other than the FaD rating, but out of all of the computers at the office, this one managed to grab the one huge CJD job in the queue and FADSpy is predicting about 18-20 days to completion at the current rate. :p

Its a shame the servers cant assign wimpy jobs to the wimpy processors by their rating... this would give a more even flow and let everyone appreciate their efforts more. IMHO
