Slow page loads with router, quick plugged straight into modem. HELP please!

I have a wgr614v4 Netgear router and this is with Charter cable. I have tried disabling the internal firewall and fiddled with a lot of settings, including the obvious rebooting the router, modem, etc... I am now plugged straight into the modem and everything is much much faster. With the router I'd often get page cannot be found errors and pictures not loading, during all times of the day. Also the router has been upgraded to the newest firmware, and worked excellently with Cox cable back home. I have heard things about MTU size, but other than that I'm stumped. Please help, as my roommates need internet too and we need to solve this!

longshot, but i didnt see you mention it. have you tried a factory reset on the router itself?

Yes, we factory reset.

Also we got a new modem from charter... super fast plugged straight into it again like before, but with router it's incredibly slow.
