Slow on t-1 but fast on 56k in AT Forums???

i'm at work on my company's t-1. i just finished downloading stuff at 150k/sec (kilobytes, not bits). but on AT forums, it's SLOW.

just for kicks, i dialed up on my laptop. it's faster. What the heck?! pages don't time out, there's still a delay, but it's small. WHAT THE HECK???

Makes sense actually, this has been said a few times but here goes again 🙂. AnandTech Forums are BANDWIDTH capped, the burst and total bandwidth numbers are shaped using a traffic shaper. So, on a T1 your burst and maximum transfer rates are much high than on your 56K modem, the bandwidth cap will be more noticable on a faster connection than a slower connection as the 56K will not burst higher than the cap.

Makes perfect sense 🙂.

Given the explanation, I'd say the answer to your question would be "depending on the time". If the forums are at peak usage, the t1 will more drastically feel the difference in speed. Odd? Yep. Subscribe to the forums for a few months and see if you like the non-capped servers 😉

well i know my 1mbit capped cable modem surfs the web faster than the T3 at work, but raw download speeds go much faster at work.. has to do with latency, which i experience more of at work on a busy Cisco 7000 series core router
