I'm attempting to run a home network with a cable modem. I'm running Win98SE with internet connection sharing and file and printer sharing enabled. My "host" PC has the built-in UTP with is connected to the cable modem. My other NIC and the other PC's NIC is connected via TCP/IP with "obtain IP settings automatically" enabled. The IP's are DHCP'ed via roadrunner. The two 10mb Linksys EtherPCI NIC's see each other in the network neighborhood, and I can browse the shared devices and directories. Here lies the problem. When ever I try to access a file (i.e. doc or text file), it takes an extreme length of time to open, and eventually the document will open with no contents. I performed a ping back and forth to the NIC's and it passes when set to default 32byte buffer. However, when I crank up the buffer rate on the ping to above 1000 bytes, it fails the ping. I can tried different cables but to no avail. There is a link between all devices (NIC's and hub). I just can't verify if there is a more serious hardware problem since I don't have spare NIC's or another 10mb Hub. I can not find any help on the Microsoft support page or Linksys corp and no suggestion either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks..
