What is the best way to go about troubleshooting a network? At work we have a crappy server and a crappy connection that will soon be upgraded. As it is, any file transfers to the server are extremely slow. It is a Novell network. Where do I begin looking for the problem or will it be solved through upgrades? People who work here tell me that this was never the case and it only recently started to become extremely slow. Thanks.

Check the server CPU utilization. If it is not high then look elsewhere. Look for printers with HP Jetdirect cards in them. Sometimes they flood the network with broadcasts. If you have any switch/hub management software, check your collision rate on the network. Also, what is the speed of your backbone and how many clients connect to the server? If you are on a 100Mb network and it started going slow, check to see if there is anything new causing electromagnetic interference on the cable that connects to the server. You may need to try rerouting it or replacing the cable (especially if it was handmade). A little more information will make it easier to narrow down what advice to give you.

Hope this helps.
