Using XviD4PSP 5 with mp4 ps3/xbox preset to encode a mkv movie I am only getting 27fps and it says it will take 1.5 hours to encode a hour and a half movie.

Just for kicks I fired up ConvertXtoDVD and encoded a test xvid movie to DVD and was getting upwards of 500fps.

I know I'm comparing apples to oranges but why is converting from Xvid to DVD so much faster then converting from mkv to mp4?

Is there a way of speeding up mp4 encoding using XviD4PSP?
I have tried installing x264vfw but it made no difference in speed.

The only faster method I have seen for encoding HD was using a beta of handbrake that used Quick Sync but I would like to stick with xvid4psp if possible as I am more familiar with it.

Im sure as u can tell I am an encoding newb...what am I doing wrong?
Is there any settings to change or codecs I should install?

or is it that encoding to h.264/x264 mp4 is just so hardware intensive that 27fps is the norm for my hardware? (My specs are in sig.

thanks

Do you have any filters or other settings applied besides the default PS3/XBOX 360 preset?

I just installed Xvid4PSP 5.10 and I am running a test encode on the Disney movie BRAVE just because it was next on my list to do in Handbrake (which I normally use). XVID is saying I am encoding at about 170-200 frames per second, and this is on a relatively old Core2Duo E4600 running at 2.4 GHz in Windows XP with 4 GB of RAM (3.25GB usable), so you definitely should be getting much faster speeds than that unless you have other settings applied or are encoding a movie that just happens to be a lot more difficult to process for some reason...

Edit: Apparently that was just the first pass. I'm not familiar with XVID so I didn't realize it was just doing an initial scan of the movie. Now that it is on the actual encoding process it is running around 22-28 frames per second. But you should still be getting better speeds than that with your computer.

Nope not using any filters.

I figured x264 would be slower to encode to then xvid but 500fps xvid .avi compared to 26fps x264 .mp4 is a huge difference.
I'm thinking either I'm doing something wrong or maybe xvid4psp 5 isn't the best program to use for encoding.

thanks

Just for comparison, I ran Brave through HandBrake with pretty much the same settings as what XVID uses for its XBOX/PS3 preset and it was slower than XVID with an average of 115 FPS on the first pass but it was a LOT faster on the second pass at 82.7 FPS.
