"Slow" LiteOn LTR-52327S

Guys,

Just picked up a LiteOn LTR-52327S CD-RW drive. Cleaned out "old" Nero software and installed w/ included CD. All went fine, but unit will only record at 24x speed. FYI: OS is Windows 98SE, EPoX EP-4PEA+(Intel 845PE), Intel P4 2.4B, 512MB PC2700, 52327S is master on secondary IDE channel, no slave. DMA is set on for both optical drives. HD is on HighPoint 372 as single drive. Primary master is LiteOn LTD-163D DVD.

I upgraded firmware from RS06 to RS09, no change in record speed. Media is Imation 48x. I did a record test w/ two files that totaled 18MB. Is it possible that I didn't do a large enough recording test to let the drive get up to max recording speed? I ran the Nero Info Tool and it indicated max write capability is 52x.

Any suggestions on what might be going on here?

TIA,

Jeff

Color me embarrassed! I tried the CD-R that LiteOn includes w/ the drive, and it recorded at 52x (speaking w/ my tail between my legs, as it were). I'm going to pick up some different media today to confirm it's the discs I have that are the problem.

Ronstang, is Smartburn something new to the 52x burner? I didn't have this "issue" w/ the LiteOn 48x burner that preceeded this 52x unit. The irony is I was happy w/ the 48x, but I was able to pick up the 52x as such a good price ($19 after rebates) that I figured I'd upgrade my daughter's machine w/ the 48x, and put the 40x unit previously in her machine in a relative's machine that has a faulty MSI drive currently.

Oh well, maybe some different media will be the ticket. Haven't had a chance to get any yet, as I'm dealing w/ a noisy Thermaltake video hsf. Picked up a Vantec model (for an Asus GF4 Ti4200) but it didn't fit. So, I pulled apart the Thermaltake and oiled it. I know that's a short term fix, but man is it quieter now.

I always had trouble with 98SE and burning software when I used the default ASPI layer. It wouldn't hurt to run force ASPI to see if it helps. Nero is supposed to have it's own ASPI layer it uses, but....

Does it (Nero) show any other speeds available? If not your idea of media is a good one.

FWIW I received a reply from LiteOne support, and they included a utility called Smartburn.exe to determine media status. I was able to confirm my earlier suspicion that my Imation media was to blame. Some checked out at 24x while others checked out at 52x.

The 24x media showed a couple of slower speeds as options, while the 52x showed 52, 48x and so on. I must have mixed some older 24x media in some 100 count holders.

Lite-On drives have been SmartBurn enabled for as long as I can remember. My first one a 24X burner had it,I don't know if the 12X one I have does since it was a freebie I have never put in a system. It can be annoying but it prevents you from "thinking" you have successfully backed up that data only to discover later that your media is crap and should not be burned at that speed.....of course this ususally occurs after the reformat of the HD so you are now SOL. I like the feature and have been stocking up on newer media as my drive speeds have increased.
