Ok, I just installed a Netgear FA311 autoswitching 10/100 ethernet card into a computer that previouslly had a Netgear FA310 in it. After a clean install the comp will see all other computers on the network, but when I try to access them (grab a file or just browse) its sooo slow that it will eventually error. I can ping just fine, play games just fine (half life, Q3, AOE 2) but I cannot perform any sort of file sharing and barely browse teh network from this machine. All the other machines are quick as lightning with any combo but the trouble box, when this guy is involved it pulls things to a crawl. I've completely loaded *clean* installs of ME and 98 with the same results. I am using the latest driver that came with the card and the network is running off a 100 mpbs Netgear hub. I've even swapped hard drives to see if anything changed and it hasn't. If you have any clue plese help me out. Thanks!!

I own one network card which causes problems similar to what you describe.
I would suggest swapping the NIC with that of a different box, then observe how each behaves.
If that does not reveal the culprit, it'll at least narrow the list of suspects.

as you know 100mbps is actually 100mega bits per second which actually means 100/8 bytes per second which is 12.5mega bytes per second. and you have to have a switch (not hub or router), to take advantage of some more speed. so you probably can transfer maybe 7 or 8 mega bytes per second..... maybe.. .. my nework hooked up directly with 2 computers only gets maybe 1 meg per second, or less and both are 100mbps nics with the 100mbps light on.

what i am saying is, (you have 3 or more computers) try ftp to each computer and downloading 20 meg files or something and see if any computer is a LOT faster than the other, if so, then you havea bad nic or wire.
if you same crappyness all around, go to best buys buy a router/hub/switch and test that out and see if you get any improvements (if not, just take back)

Yeah, I can dump large files very quickly on any combination of computers EXCEPT transfers that involve the problem box. They sloowly start and error out. What I find funny is that this computer has no problem at all playing games with very consistent ping rates. I swapped the nic out once with a FA310 and it worked great, I was just hoping there was a mis config with the FA311 so I wouldn't have the hassle of taking it back
