Slow internet on only one computer.

My computers internet speed has been a bit lower than the 5MB internet I'm paying for. I keep getting just under 2MB. I thought it was just a wireless problem. I plugged my computer directly into the router. Still 2MB on speedtests. I tried plugging it directly into the modem. Still 2MB. Figured it must be a software problem. I booted into Ubuntu and did a speedtest. STILL 2MB.

Both my Wireless PCI-E card and my onboard Ethernet give me 2MB speedtests. I have 3 other computers on the same network. All of them get 5MB. I'm lost, and I could really use some ideas.

Here my specs:
WRT54G Router
AMD 64 X2 6000+
2GB DDR2 RAM
ASUS M2N-E SLI AM2 NVIDIA nForce 500
abit Airpace PCI-E Wifi Card
XFX 7900GS Video Card

If the TCP/IP is optimized ( http://www.ezlan.net/Internet_Speed.html ), and it does 2Mb/sec. when directly on the Modem, then talk to your ISP.

BTW. I doubt that you have 5MB Internet.

More like 5Mb/sec, B=Byte b=bit 1Byte=8bits.

I've tried DrTCP and I still can't get it past 2Mb/s. I know it isn't an ISP issue. All the other computers hit 5Mb/s without problems. I'm thinking it's a hardware issue since Windows and Ubuntu both give me the same speed results. Unfortunately, I'm not entirely sure about that either. Both of my onboard ethernet and my PCI-E wifi card give me the same results.

Yeah, I always get my bits and bytes confused I have Charter 5Mb/s service.

Well, I tried a couple more things. I booted into safe mode with networking with it directly connected into the modem, still gave me 2Mb. I tried updating all my drivers, still giving me 2Mb. I updated my BIOS, still at 2Mb. I pulled out my old Mac G4 to test the internet speed, and it got 5Mb. I'm concluding that it MUST be a hardware problem of some sort. I have no idea what the problem would be, though. It's so odd that two different network adapters give the same result.

Does anyone think I should try and buy a PCI ethernet adapter and test it? Or is it something a bit more complicated than that?

Do you have both the onboard & wireless active at the same time?

Nope. I would disable one and try the other. I even removed the PCI-E wifi card and tested it. Still gave me 2Mb/s.

When using the onboard, what speed are you connecting at when plugged into your router? Is it 100 Mbps?

Do you have a software firewall on this PC?

I use ZoneAlarm on it. I ran the tests with it enabled and disabled, both had the same result. I'm convinced it's a weird hardware problem of somekind. It can't be a software problem. I unplugged both my hard drives and ran Ubuntu off a live cd. The speedtests gave me the same 2Mb I've been getting. Also, just so people know, I've been trying multiple speed tests. I'm not just using the same one over and over again

Does ZoneAlarm show any traffic going through it? Does your router show activity on the port you are plugged into, when you aren't doing anything?

ZoneAlarm doesnt show any activity when my computer is just sitting idle. My router just stays lit when I'm not doing anything. Once I do something, it blinks a bit. So, doesn't look like anything out of the ordinary there.

Well, I remembered that I had an old PCI Wifi card in my closet. I installed it and I'm STILL getting the same result! Is there something on the motherboard that could slow down internet for some reason? I am completely out of ideas now.

Sorry, but I'm out of ideas too. Did you try going on the Asus fourms? I know that board you have had some problems when it first came out. I don't recall anything like this though.

Otherwise, if you have a spare HD with clean Windows installation (I always keep something like this on a small 10GB Drive), install it temp., and make a Diagnosis whether it is the Hardware or your "creative" software arrangement.

It's only one partition, actually. I only run Ubuntu off of a Live Cd, it isn't actually installed.

I tried the two programs and I reset the TCP/IP stack (whatever that means). Still getting the same speeds.

Unfortunately, I don't have a space HD. Is there any other way to diagnose whether it's a hardware problem?
