buffering video then auto-downgrading to 360p or 240p :(

ironically, when i had dsl for my house (1meg/sec) a couple of decades ago, i thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.
(I was on free netzero 56k dial-up.)
well worth the upgrade price of $9.99/month from Verizon.

luxury creep

I recall my first time with my own broadband connection which was also DSL since cable took forever to make it to New Haven DESPITE Fairfield county being one of the original test markets for "@ Home".

Seriously slow for 2022 but back in the day in was miraculous! :D

Driving me nuts now but I can't recall the name of the company beyond "Tele-something" but I remember it came with a small PC-sized DSL modem like the ones Hughes used to use.

It may be slow, but at least it's symmetric! (Ish.) ;)

I remember back when ADSL came out, it was on the Newbridge system. Huge modem and pretty elaborate setup for 1mbps. I don't recall what the upload was but it would have been much lower. Over the years it got upgraded to Paradyne and then Stinger and it could go up to like 24mbps or so depending on how close you were to the CO. Upload was 1 meg. Still a lot of that in service today actaully. The dialup box is even still in service. There's still a couple customers on it. May God have mercy on them.

I've noticed hotels throttling internet lately. Free wifi but you get garbage speeds unless you pay the 9.99/day upgrade.

Or, why it's not a bad idea to either get a hotspot-friendly phone plan or even a cellular-capable tablet or laptop! You'll know you'll always have a good internet connection, at least in your home country.

So many hotels either haven't upgraded their WiFi in ages (possibly since it was installed) or just don't know how to configure it properly. They don't put in enough repeaters/meshes, or make every guest share a connection that can't handle more than a few people at once.

As it is, it's funny to think my home internet (500Mbps) is far faster than many hotels had even a few years ago.

DSL's all I got.

Did dial up for a while, then Starband (satellite). Don't remember the rate, but it was under 1M as I remember. DSL came in with 1M and I took that for a while. They bumped it to 3M after a couple of years, then to 6 and then to 12. Eventually they got to 25 and lately I've been testing at 32-33.

No other options reliably. Some cell signal, but not consistent.

I still remember the days of downloading 1MB every 10 minutes which means that mp3 download would be done in under an hour!

You'd be way ahead of the curve with that hotel wifi.

What kind of stuff are you guys doing in hotels that you're noticing issues? (Or what brands are you staying at?) We'll usually have 1-2 devices web browsing while streaming video to a third and I can't think of any problems we've had this year

I tend to expect hotel wifi to be slow. About on par with my hospital room's wifi, except for my upload being weirdly high...

Yeah I've experienced that in most hotels I stay at (granted, they're fairly cheap ones, like Days Inn type places). Rarely will I stay at a place that has fast Internet and I can watch YouTube videos in high quality. :-/

Damn yutes. I remember the days of dowloading at 112 CPS, that's characters per second.
