Slow hard drive transfer rates in WIndows 7, fast in safe mode

Hi

I'm having slow hard drive transfer rates in windows 7 (1-2 MB/s). But when I switch to safe mode, the transfer rates dramatically increase. This phenomenon occurs for SATA to SATA drive transfer and for SATA to USB drive transfer. How can I locate what software is slowing my transfer down?

Thanks!!

Try it with your AV system turned off.

Make sure your SATA driver is up to date.

OK - but something that is running in Windows startup is competing for your system processing. You may need to go into MSCONFIG/STARTUP and selectively turn off some drivers. When you boot in SAFE MODE, those drivers are not running. If you leave your system ON 24/7, it really is a side issue with little consequence. But, it is a satisfying challenge to find the culprit.

Need more information on the problem - are there any processes hogging the harddrives and the harddrive led is on or is the transfer speed simply slowing down for no apparent reason? Is MS update running which could slow down drive transfers.

In Windows 7 Task Manager, click view, and check I/O read I/O write.
This will show you what is hogging the drive.
