So I have a home network running on a brand spankin' new d-link dir-655 wireless-n gigabit router. All wiring is cat 6.
The cable modem and router are in the living room, with the only vista PC, an HTPC, connected through gigabit LAN. The other computers are throughout the house, all connected with a gigabit LAN connection except for one laptop, which is on 802.11g.
That might be TMI, but ya never know.
Basically my problem is, when I had a 10\100mb router, I was getting pretty slow file transfers. Especially considering I'm dealing in blu-ray and hd-dvds (around 15-40GB each) being served from a PC across the house to the HTPC. So I figured gigabit was in order.
Now when transfering between gigabit windows XP computers, I get great speeds, with network utilization in the 90% range. But when I do any transfers to do with Vista, I get lower speeds. But that's not all. If I use the Vista box to initiate the file transfer, I get about 20% network utilization. But if I use the XP box to initiate the transfer, I get about 40% network utilization.
I know there are issues with vista communication with XP, but is there anything I can do to get decent network throughput? Or do I have to wait for a service pack?
