Slow ESATA transfers since changing over to Windows 8.1

It starts out saying it is transfering at 175MBps but then drops down to 25MBps, I have many TBs to move is there a setting or some software that can help? I tried google but they only seem concerned about USB 3.0.

I never had this problem in Windows 7 and they are the same hard drives.

Do you get a better result if you plug the HDD directly to the motherboard?

It sounds like your HDD is on the way out. They often slow down before they fail.

the hard drive is fine it transfers data at an average of 127MBps internally. It is with ALL drives I try to put stuff on. I had the same problem with my HTPC that was running 8.0. They all run full speed off the MB.
I know it is not the drive dock I have tried it with three of them, three StarTechs and 2 iNeos same thing-it has to be the OS. It's not the ESATA ports either, I have tried five different ones(multiple cards from different manufacturers. Windows 7- blazing fast, Win 8= SLOW.
I need help hunting this down and fixing it please.

What version of eSATA are you using? I have an eSATA 2 drive running on Win 8.1 and haven't noticed any slowdown. Maybe eSATA 3 is a different story.

eSATA is SATA.

Are your eSATA ports on a different card or controller from your integrated motherboard data?

Have you tried a different cable?

How are you clocking the internal transfer? (A different source or destination hdd? or copying to/from a location on the same drive?)

they now reside on a SATA3 ESATA card, I have tried it with my old computer, I have tried it with those cables that hook into the MB and have an ESATA backplane-it is the same in every scenario. I am clocking the actual transfer according to what windows says and so far it has been pretty accurate.

Does anyone know a registry tweak or some setting that I am not aware of? This motherboard does not have ESATA though my old one did and when I upgraded the OS the same thing happened.
I've tried different cables.

Could the drive be defaulting to non-DMA mode under Windows 8 for some reason?

What happens if you remove the drive from the eSATA enclosure and mount it internally? (The answer should be "no change.")
