Slow DVD data transfer capability

I transfer data from one computer to another (not on the same network or same location) via DVD. The destination computer has an external (USB) hard drive that is the ultimate destination. The destination computer is running Windows XP (clean) installed about six months ago.

Recently I replaced one external HD on the destination computer with another, and ever since then it has taken forever to transfer data-a half hour or more for a full DVD (versus 10-15 minutes before). Even transferring the data to an internal HD first takes just as long. I am not using the new external HD as the destination (yet), its going to the same external HD as before.

If I try to transfer the data from the DVD to an external HD I frequently get CRC errors. The data on the DVD is perfect and verified when burnt (usually the same day).

I suspect I messed some setting up somehow, but I'm at a loss as to what it is. Any ideas?

One further thing. I'm using Windows Explorer to transfer the data, and ever since I installed WinXP on this computer Windows Explorer has been a bit unstable, frequently locking up.

The destination computer is an Athlon 2400, 1 gig of memory, two internal (PATA) hard drives, two external (USB 2.0) hard drives.
