slow DSL...

since about sunday my DSL has been incredibly slow. I use Earthlink (who get it from Covad, 1.5 down and .256 up). I tried using Earthlink's customer support and that's such a joke. "Turn off your DSL modem for 30 seconds" "Are you sure that you haven't installed any new phones without a DSL filter?" "Make sure it's not near a scanner" bah! I've changed nothing since it was last working (last Sunday).

i've tried ipconfig /renew and i still have the same problem. Loading sites take a long time (about 25 seconds to load this message screen) and my pings are very high. If I use a streaming service it's ok. I did a dslreports speed test and I was getting 1.2 down and .1 up. but playing CS or Lineage 2 is impossible.

any ideas?

Try ckecking out the forums over at DSL Reports SportSC4, I'm pretty sure they have Earthlink reps that post there.

If you can't get any results there, call them back and insist a higher level tech support rep. I've done that before and I just told them that I'll cancel my dsl and go to cable if they can't get these issues resolved.....That seems to makes them move a little faster,at least it did for me.

Good Luck.

you may also wanna use a program such as neotrace to trace an ip and see how many "hops" its taking you to get from your pc to a site and see if you are being routed back east or something. sometimes routing gets screwed up and unless you provide your isp with proof they will try to screw you and tell you its all on your end. just an idea because ive had to do the same thing with my dsl provider and they lied to me telling me nothing had changed but one day all the sudden my routing to www.yahoo.com went from going from seattle straight to california to my trace hopping all the way from seattle to chicago to new york to texas to cali to get to the same site :|

I just went through a similar problem. I got a new modem, problem solved. It was really odd, I never had any problems. Then I started to get kicked and lots of lag in games, and I would momentarily lose my net connection all the time. New modem, problem solved.

I've been having the same problem for about three weeks now, also from Earthlink. Been doing what Zipp said about insisting higher level support and threatening to leave, and they sent someone out last Friday to look and things. He concluded that the modem was bad and said he'd have Earthlink send out a replacement (since their modems have a 1 year warranty), so johnjkr1 is probably right about a new modem solving the problem.
