slow DSL speeds

My DSL speed is slow as hell, only 40kb/s download. My friend has the same DSL with the same provider, the same modem, and is about the same distance from the CO and he downloads 3x faster. I run my connection through a 4 port router and even with all the other computers off, the connection is slow. I even disconnected the router and just ran the eithernet from the modem to my computer, same results.

Does anyone know why this may be or how it can be resolved?

Firstly welcome to the forums.

Generally when you experience a problem like this, there is nothing any of us can recommened other than the obvious.

Ring your ISP! :p

Sounds like a problem with your line, so the only people who are going to be able to fix it are them.

If there's no packet loss, it sounds like the ISP could just have you misconfigured at 384kbps..

Try this First.

Download DrTCP: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dslre
ports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe">http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP021.exe</a>

Run the program, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

Start with:

MaxMTU - for DSL =1492 Cable=1500 DialUp=576

Tcp Receive - 255552

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

Notice it said above Start with

These settings are not written in "stone" there is variability depending on the computer other setting. So try few setting and measure your Download for each setting.

In addition, in case a person has a Router the Router's MTU if set differently can affect the general MTU.

JackMDS, your link to DrTCP has an error. I'm notifying you of this since your previous post also contained the same error. Here's the corrected link:

Here's DrTCP

Regardless, thanks to your great service in the networking forum.

What modem (the modem itself, not the connection) are you running? I run an 'Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5260" and it tends to overheat if I leave it on for more than ~ a week. Don't know about any other modems, though...

Call up the ISP and ask them to run the line test. Sometimes it could be inside wiring too.

You've got a problem there.

I had an Alcatel 1000 I built in 1997 up and running for 3 years 24/7 365 and now since February of this year a Zoom X4 going ever since. I only switched to the Zoom because I wanted to not because I had to.
