If it makes a difference, Im on Windows 2000 and the other 2 computers are on Win98 2nd edition. Transferring files are fine, but when I go through the My Network Places, it takes a good minute for the other comps to show up. And when they do, it takes another good minute after clicking on their shared drive. Is this normal or am I missing something here?

Appreciate your help!

I assuming it must be because our switch and all of our NICs are 10/100 and under the Network general properties, it says Speed 100.0 Mbps.

Or, you can intall NetBEUI on all computers, and use it as the default protocol for file sharing.

It usually is slow first up when you boot all the comps up to do a search or whatever.
Aslong as its fast transfering files then all is good. Just leave your comps on.

Speed-up Browsing Remote Computers (Windows 2000/XP)

When you browse a Windows 95, 98 or Me machine from a Windows 2000 or XP computer
extra time is taken to determine if any scheduled tasks or printers are enabled on the destination computer.

Open your registry and find the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace]

To disable checking for scheduled tasks delete the {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} sub-key.

To disable checking for printers delete the {2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} sub-key.

The change should take effect immediately.

I had a win 2k pc and a win 98 pc on my home lan and I used this reg hack on my 2k box, it solved my network delay.

NetBEUI is installed on all of our computers. Im not sure how to set it as default though?

13black,
I opened the registry in the sys32 folder and could not find the key you listed. I also tried doing a search to no avail.
Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks everyone!

Try using regedit instead of regedt32. Also you won't find these key's on a 9X box, only on the 2K pc.

I have TCPIP and NetBeui installed on my LAN. I use TCPIP for Internet Browsing and Netbeui for file and print sharing. TCPIP is my default protocol. NetBeui is bound to file and print sharing only, along with Client for Micro$oft networks. This way Lan side communications, PC to PC are done with NetBeui and WAN side is done with TCPIP. At least that's what I think I've done.:D It works for me through my router. I also use static IP's on the LAN side for a faster bootup of the PC.
