I know that over time your computer tends to slow down but i am running an old but decent 3.4 proccesor. My computer takes approximetely ten minutes for it to start up. I have few items on start up and run regular defragments and virus scans.I am still running windows xp as i prefer it to vista.I know there could be many things affecting this but I would really appreciate any help.

get "Startup Control Panel" and post all the items it lists as autostarting, under every category.

What's your memory like?
Minus disk framentation, running processes and start-up items, the other 2 possibilities is low HDD space, hence low Virtual Memory, Or running low on RAM itself.
Also check for spyware. Most of them aren't detected by anti-virus software.

You can also try running CCleaner to clear some garbage out.

Sounds more like major malware + maybe insufficient memory, some system specs wouldn't hurt. Also like rob said, you may have too many things starting up that, therefore slowing the boot, also the malware in that case would be sapping a lot of your resources upon boot as well.
