doing a simple chkdsk /f /v /r /x on a xp dell 160g sata hd, steps 1-4, go quick (20 min), step 5 (90 mins more), on other pc's, desktops/laptops - all non-dell, this takes considerably less time, 30 mins max in total. reformatted and low leveled the hd, same prob. tried diff hd on the dell, same prob. reinstalled win xp twice over, same issue.

called dell to ask - man, i'm sorry i did this, after an hour, they say its a operation system issue.

is there any technical documents on how long this should take depending on the size of a hd? can any recommend a alternative tool for doing this, i hate using norton disk doctor as its a resouce hog.

thanks all.

The Western Digital data lifeguard tools will test the drive even if it isn't a WD.

after low leveling the drive 2x, running full sector scans, writing 0's to the drive for 9 hours continuously and talking with dell for many painstaking hours, the shipped a replacement drive which doesnt have that issue.

thanks for your help crew :)
