Slow CD-ROM spin-up

I have a 52x CD-ROM in my AthlonXP 1600+. When I go to do something, like start an application that requires the CD, it takes a LONG time to spin up. If I just exited the program and then go back in not long after, it does ok. I had a Delta in there, and now I've got another one from a friend that does the same thing. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks!

When you access the CDROM from a halt, it will take a moment for the drive to get up to speed and identify the CD and read the FAT table (is it called the FAT table on a CD?) Anyway, it just sounds like a basic cheap CDROM. What was the brand of the second drive you tried? A better quality drive will do the same thing, only faster. Of course it could be your media. Try cleaning off all the dust and fingerprints and see if that helps.
Disabling 'auto insert notification' might make a difference too. I'm not really familiar with the other CDROM device properties (disconnect?, sync data transfer?).

Just some thoughts. Hopefully they're not too wrong. 🙂
