Slow CD reader and writer on same IDE channel?

I have a Mitsumi 2x CD writer and Mitsumi 6x CD reader on my FragMaster 2000 system. See link in sig. Two questions:

1. My HD is Ultra DMA 100. Does having the slower reader on that channel slow down disk data throughput? In other words, does the channel throttle down to the speed of the slower device?

2. Would there be any risk having both the reader (slave) and writer (master) on the same channel? Would this work for copying CD's, or would I end up making coasters?

I'm not concerned about CD copy speed, and don't copy many CD's. Right now I'm just interested in system stability and hard drive performance. Thanks.
