Slow burning with 32X CDRW -- HELP!

First off, here is the config of my computer.
Primary master --> 40g HD Primary slave --> CD-ROM (44X)
Secondary master -->32X lite-on CDRW Secondary slave --> 10g HD

The CDRW is suppose to burn a complete cd in <4 min according to cdrinfo. Yet, the time I'm getting is horrible, somewhere like 12-14 mins if I want to do a CD-to-CD copy (on-the-fly). Another thing I want to mention is my buffer is always empty, so I guess the buffer underrun protection kicks in and stall the timing a bit.

However, I try burning it to HD first (took ~6 min), and then burning to cdrw(took ~8 min). This time, the buffer was always full and it still gives me a crappy 8 min. I'm using CloneCd 4.0 to burn cuz Nero was giving me worst time. Anyone knows what's going on? Like is there some sort of setting I forgot to set? Thanks.

Make sure DMA is enabled on your primary and secondary ide channels.

Hmmm...I thought I had enable it already...but I'll check again tonight when I get home, thanks. But will DMA make that much of a difference, like boosting the time difference back from 12 minutes down to <4minutes?

Looks like you and me are in the same boat. My friend has the same problem.

I haven't heard any bad stories on the 32X Lite On's.

My tech thread that I posted

Without getting technical, yes DMA can make all the difference. It's a matter of going either hardware --> hardware, which is DMA, or hardware-->CPU-->hardware, which is obviously MUCH slower.

I hope what I'm going to say helps you, because I had the EXACT problem posted here a few months ago, and have seen it several times since, without anyone declaring a successful resolution. Fortunately, I've finally found the ah heck in my system. I'm working with win2k, but I assume WinXP handles this the same. Win9x I'm sure does not. Anyhoo....

I know this sounds simple, but, when you check your primary and secondary IDE in the hardware/device manager, make sure that not only the first device (listed as "0" I believe) is set to "DMA if available", but also check below it for the second device (listed as device "1", I believe). Mine was still set to PIO mode and, when changed to the DMA setting, my cd's magically and wonderfully burned as fast as the media could handle! Problem Solved!

Like I said, hopefully you have a similar knock-yourself-on-the-head-and-say-DOH oversight. (Hmmm, new acronym? kyothasD!) If so, you'll be as relieved as I am!
