slow boot with xp pro

Make sure all of the cd rom drives are empty and then disconnect from the network first. Boot again and see if things improve. If it does, you could be booting into a network and the system takes a while to look for a boot disk. CD's in the cd drives can also delay booting if the system is setup to boot from cd drives first before the hdd. A cd in the drive will have to be checked by Windows before moving to the next media. Another to resolve this is to configure your boot sequence to boot first from the hdd.

Friend has same problem with XP Home Edition on his (eww) Dell. When the blue thingy goes across it takes like 3 minutes till the desktop comes up. Been looking for some ideas, so I'll say thank you for the help as well 🙂

Often un-installing unused programs and drivers will help speed things up. If not, it seems that only a fresh installation of XP will cure what ails it.

Run MSCONFIG and edit the Boot .Ini. Instead of 30 secs make that 3 secs. Also try running the system with minimum peripherals and see if that will improve. If it does, install them one at a time while booting in between to find out what is causing the drag. I'm assuming you are still on a fresh install of XP and no other programs, i.e. Anti-virus, or Spyware program is running and that you are still disconnected from networking including the net. Let us know what you find out.
