Slow Boot-up issue

Dear gang,

Well, I just plum finished fixing my dad's computer and I've gone and messed it up again! He has 5 IDE devices, of which (of course) only 4 can be up and running at once (until we get the PCI ATA controller).

Well, I have been switching between the ZIP drive and the second hard drive for my father, and it has been working fine. Today, I go to do the same thing. I shut it down, unplugged the ZIP Drive and then plugged in the 2nd HDD. Suddenly, it's booting up slow as heck, lingering on the proc posting screen (PROCESSOR ID) for near 5 minutes before continuing to boot up normally.

I have tried booting it back up with the ZIP attached, with only the primary HDD, and even with a completely different HDD. It's continuing to do it! I have also checked the IDE connections, the Floppy connection and even moved one of the RAM DIMMs, and yet it's booting up slowly. I have gone to the BIOS, but nothing seems out of place.

Can anyone tell me what might be going on?

Thank you!

Jacob

I would try the process of elimination. My experience with problems booting up with multiple HDDs is that when one HDD starts to go bad the whole system suffers. First I would take out the pci ide adapter card. If that doesn't solve your problem, then I would disconnect all of the HDDs except for the OS drive. If it still causes you problems then I would guess that drive is the place to start. Run the manufactors drive utilities to see if the drive is dying. If everything is fine after disconnecting the card and all but the OS drive, then I would connect additional HDDs one at a time to see which one is the culprit.
