slow boot caused by ext hdd

I have an issue where my PC is really slow to boot if I have my ext USB drive turned on. If I power it down, the boot up goes much faster.

I normally leave it on because I stream video from it to my HTPC.

my boot sequence is correct - any ideas on how to get the BIOS/OS to skip examining it?

I doubt there's any way to skip the disc checking thing. I leave mine turned off until it starts to boot into Windows (Win7) or it takes forever.

It might help to disable "Boot from other devices" in the BIOS, too. Tell the BIOS to only boot from your CD/DVD drive or from your hard drive(s).

And you might want to check your Windows System Event Log, too. If there are any errors coming from the USB disk, that will slow the boot.
