slow and inconsistent folder sharing

I tried setting up an impromptu NAS box: Windows 7 64 bit, shared folder with everyone with read/write access, network discovery on and password protected sharing off.

I've got 3 client computers with Win7-64bit, and 1 with WinXP-64bit. All computers are hooked up to a Netgear GS108 gigabit switch.

1 Win7 computer regularly can write to the shared folder at 100MB/s. The other 2 Win7 boxes write anywhere from 20-70MB/s. And the WinXP box has intermittent connection to it, and write around 7-9MB/s.

What gives? I've tried turning off remote differential, checksum offloading, etc.

Thanks for your help.

I would say there's no issues with the 2 Win7 clients, although 20 MB/s is pretty low. Are all three Win7 clients running on the same hardware? (same model laptop or something)

WinXP-64bit, yeesh. Make sure you have the correct drivers. IIRC drivers were a big PITB with that OS.

What type of cables are you using? Cat 5, 5e, 6? Are the cables prefabricated or did you crimp them yourself?

Other options:
1. Try different 10/100/1000 switch, or a 10/100 switch for sanity sake.
2. Try a different cable on the problem clients.

Thanks for the help.
1. I tried a different switch (same model), and it didn't change the speeds. The machine that was really fast is still really fast, and the others are medium, and the XP is slow
2. Tried different cables too. Although I haven't replaced the XP on. I'll give that a shot. All the cables are prefab Cat6
3. There's to win7 boxes that are identical hardware. And the majority of the software is the same. But who knows what other software the slower computer might be installed on it. I might look more into it.

I have noticed a difference when copying a large file vs a large folder. On the XP box, it will take 50 seconds to copy a 2.8GB file, and still take 50 seconds to copy a 375MB folder (with 1300 files in it). The Win7 boxes also take a hit, but not as drastic.

Are there any settings that will help with that?

Thanks again
