Everyone seems very excited about dual core CPUs. I'm thinking of building a new barebones (I've done a couple before), but I'm not exactly expert at it. I'm looking at the Asus T2-PH1 with an Intel Pentium D 820 Smithfield 800MHz FSB LGA 775 Dual Core, EM64T Processor. The Asus has the 775 socket, and the CPU says it goes with a 775 socket. Are these compatible? Do the dual core CPUs go in the same sockets as the regular Intel CPUs?

Thanks!

You will ahve to make sure the Asus board has the 955 chipset... if it doesnt it wont support Dual Core iirc

Aha.. thanks. The spec on the barebones is northbridge 915G, southbridge ICH6. So, I presume the dual core CPU is no go with this. *sigh*

How did you know this, aside from normal engineering geek reading...? I go to newegg, or whoever, and look at the specs for the Intel chip, and I'm matching up with the socket and it looks OK... there's nothing I can see that says "requires northbridge 955" or something like that to guide me on this. How does one know?

Write these down:

1) Forsake all things other than computers
2) Read Anandtech Articles and Forums at least 12 times a day
3) Remember it all
4) ?????
5) Profit

Seriously though, it is just reading and what not. The board that system has will support any non-dual core socket 775 P4s but no dualies... sorry. Of course you could always try finding a MicroATX board with the right chipset and replace, or simply build your system up from the ground
