Topic is subject. I'm building a htpc and wanted to know if I could get ahold of a good slot loading dvd rom.

Could I even hook up any, doesn't have to be slot loading, laptop dvd drive to a desktop motherboard?

Err, doesn't Pioneer still make 16X Slot-loading DVD drives? Or is the OP looking specifically for a slimline version?

Yeah... are you just looking for a slot load drive?

I haven't checked if that's a good one, or if that's a good place to buy from, but I know there are some slot load drives made for desktops.

Here's my HTPC...
It's using a laptop slot-loading DVD drive with a desktop motherboard. The laptop-to-desktop interface converter was included with my case.

HTH.

That case BTW was also available in black. To tell you the truth I think I like the black case better-- I have built an HTPC for a relative using the black one and it came out NICE.

I'd try and avoid slot loading drives - I've had some in the past, a scsi Pioneer cd drive & an ide Pioneer 16x dvd drive. The scsi flat out stopped reading disks in a year or two. The ide worked for a while, but eventually wore out & any slightly off balance cd really vibrates in the drive and reads either very slowly or not at all (most not at all).

My opinion, they are far behind tray drives in durability.

I maintained tower computers that sit on the floor under desks at work, and I find I like using slot-loading drives with those a lot more than tray-loaders... After having to swap out 6 or 7 of those tray-loaders because the users accidentally broke the trays in the ejected position with an errant knee. :p

Plextors release of the slot drive has alleviated the shoot out of discs

ooo that's tempting... might go ahead and order this, didn't need a burner in my htpc system but maybe this will make me think I do. Thanks guys.

Yep, that's nice. I was going to get an NEC3520a, but seeing Plextor's new slot loading drive, I'll pay a little extra and get the Plextor.

P.S. I've had just about every version of Pioneer's slot loading DVD-ROM drives and they are GREAT. No problems with them at all. It's hard for me to go back to trays after using slot drives. :(

checkout the online store at mini-itx.com. they are a little pricey, but they have a decent list of slot load slimline drives. could give you some ideas of models to look for.

I love slot loading drives, I may just have to get that Plextor, unless Pioneer or NEC comes out with something similar.

I  my 106S slot load DVD-ROM, I'd rather have a Pioneer, but if Plextor is the only slot load, I'd get it !
