which is the hands-down best?

i recently acquired a Pioneer A05S. Is this a good one? When I say good, I mean does it have high rip speeds? is there better?

I think Pioneer is the only brand that makes them....there maybe other brands such as Aopen but they are rebadged pioneer drives...

The 106S is the workhorse Pioneer slot load DVD player. I have 5 of them and they are great. There is a new model out - the 120S - a shorter chassis - but there are complaints about difficulty loading. The 106S is not easy to come by these days. It is a 16X DVD player.

Pioneer and AOpen are the only manufacturers of PC slot loaders that I know of.

I have had several of the Pioneer slot loaders and really like them. Watch what you say about slot loaders around here.
People are very fond of their tray loaders! 😛

I think Fry's sells Cendyne Slot Load DVD-ROM drives that are just rebadged Pioneer 106S. They could have switched to the 120S though.

I have the 106s and I LOVE it and I don't want to go back to tray loading drives. It's very practical when you have a DVD on top of your burner so you can eject the two disks and you don't have to wait for the upper tray to get back in to reach the second CD. It's a bit noisier than a tray based model but the added woah factor plus "ease of use" is worth it in my opinion.

After an aopen slot load dvd drive rendered a few of my favorite dvds unusable by making large scratches to the disc surface, i have vowed to never use another slot load again. They're cool looking but i'd sacrafice cool for something thats non-destructive.
