I have an AMD 700 Slot A and ASUS #?. From what I have noticed from reading this forum is that my AMD 700 Slot A is a 'Classic' and may not be supported anymore, ie: newer motherboards. The ASUS MB was the first big name MB I have ever purchased. It's been a pain since the day I bought, now the CPU maybe a turkey also. Any words of advice?

Overclock it if you really need more performance and are willing to risk it. Otherwise, aside from buying a high speedgrade (1ghz) "Classic" Athlon, you're stuck.

Kinda like the BP6 owners were when they got Dual Celerons.

There are Slot A Thunderbird Athlons that you can upgrade your system with if you don't want to overclock. But with how cheap Socket A mobos are getting, it's better to just switch out motherboards.

which Asus board do yo have..is it the K7V board..if so, then that board is one of the best board out there for the classic...you still have plenty of ooomph left in that chip...you can overclock by using a GFD.

I had a 700 classic on a K7V, but it got fried and replaced with a slot tbird under warranty. The boost was minimal. If you do opt for a slot thunderbird, you CANNOT get speeds over 800 to be stable unless you are very lucky, or modify the slot with 4 capacitors (and 4 resistors somewhere else - its in a thread by JimS at amdzone.com). Try OC'ing your current cpu, or maybe pop in a 1ghz classic if you can find one.

I have a slot A classic Athlon 700 running at 1010MHz set to 1.8vcore. It's benches right up there with the socket cpus in many things and still makes for one helluva PC! I recommend getting a goldfinger device with cache divisor (if you need cache divisor on it), then OC the hell out of it. I had to upgrade my BIOS (Abit Ka7) to run over 900MHz stable. The nice thing about the slots is, you remove the plastic case to install goldfinger. This makes it much cooler already!
