Slot A or Socket A???

I "think" I understand the difference between Slot A and Socket A. Is AMD going to keep producing Slot A's at higher MHZ or is socket A the thing now? I want to put together a new system and would like to do a processor upgrade and not have to swap out my MB a year from now. I am currently looking at a soyo SY-k7via with a 600MHZ Athlon I know that the the k7via will support up to a ghz processor😕 I gues I am looking for a little techie advice. I dont want to break the bank. Trying to keep the Case/MB/CPU combo about $200 and the Soyo/Athlon 600mhz will keep me in that range. Got any ideas???? ALso has anyone had any experience with the SOYO k7via?

Slot A is being/was phased out. Socket A is the way to go.

Not just socket a, but the chipsets on the socket boards are usually better. I think you want Via KT133, or the new AMD chipset that just came out. You also may want to consider the soon to be released DDR boards with 266MHz Ram. The prices shouldn't be that much different.

It's starting to look like slotA is a dead duck. The slotA Tbird selection is ziltch and the classics appear to be old stock.

Get yourself a Soyo SY-K7VTA socketA board (the SY-K7VIA is SlotA). SlotA is dying off fast.
I'm desparately scrounging to find a SlotA TBird in the 900Mhz area so I don't have to get a new motherboard soon.

But if you are buying a new system definately get a SocketA board.

Socket A is the way they are going now. The Slot format is being killed off. I dont think they even made a GHz Slot ship

The last Slot A classic was a 1GHZ chip.

There are some T-birds Slot A too.

I have a Tbird 700 Slot A. A few of those came out right at the beggining of Tbirds. They were all OEM. If you want to think about the future, go with Socket A for sure. Plus, they are easier to cool and take up less space.
