Is there a Slot 1 CPU that runs over 333MHZ.
This may be a dumb question but I cant find them if there is.
Heres why I want ot know,My father in law has a older computer w/ a AOpen MB(model # AX6BC) and a 333mhz cpu.For Christmas we want to try to get him a faster CPU.
Anyone have one for sale or KNow if I can get one?
Thanks People.;)

Your mobo has 440BX.

Slot1 CPU goes up to Coppermine 1GHz or Katmai 600MHz

Are you looking for P3 or Celeron?

You can probably use Celeron up to 1.1GHz using a slocket.

oh THANKS
I guess I should of told you its a Pentium 2.
I did find one o E-Bay for $10 used w/fan,450MHZ.Is that the fastest one?

933mhz on E-Bay

yes, but you have to run it at 700MHz, because your motherboard can't reliably use 133MHz FSB and multiplier setting on Intel CPU's can not be altered.

I wouldn't bother upgrading to anything less than a 500Mhz - you just wouldn't notice the performance increase.

Take Jerbois' advice...look for a slocket adaptor and get a higher speed Pentium III with a 100Mhz Front Side Bus. I did this a few months back and had my Supermicro BX motherboard running a Pentium III 850.

You will also want to upgrade your BIOS to the latest version so it correctly identifies the later CPUs.

Another reason for using Slocket is you have an option of using that CPU on socket mobo as well. Since there is not an adapter that I'm aware of for converting slot to socket, you can not use slot1 on socket 370 mobo if you get a slot CPU. Heatsinks are readily available for socket 370, they're more versatile since you can use it on either socket or slot. If you ever choose to sell it, you have a better chance.

I hope this helps.

Ok,so in order to use a P3 cpu I need to get a "slocket"?Where might I get one of these?
But if I put anytning higher than 700mhz in there without the slocket it willonly run at 700mhz right.
So can I get a 700mhz p3 and just pop it in there without a slocket and be done with it?

Slocket or may be called slotket cost about $15 to $20. Try eBay or pricewatch. You can probably get a 1100MHz Celery for $100 or so. Slap it together with Athlon heatsink(they're the same) and slocket and you have a nice 1.1GHz system for $130.

DO NOT use 1.2GHz Celeron. It has a different architecture and its not compatible with BX board.

Slot1 100MHz FSB CPU's are expensive since they're short on supply.

Celeron sounds so Celery, but 1.1GHz will kick your 333MHz PII's ass BIG time.

Thank you so much! you have been of great help!
He will have a nice Christmas present sitting under the tree from us this year,he loves to play games (Nascar,Unreal Tourn)so this will be great.
If you have any more tips please let me know,Ive never used one of these Slockets before,do they come with install instructions as far as jumper settings.I saw a picture of one and it had several jumper pins.Im not intrerested in OC it but if you think it would be benificial let me know.
Thanks again.

Saw your sig by the way on the K7S5A,I have this board and it seems to be working good,what happened to yours?Mine does reset the Damn,BIOS setting every time I power down the system.But other than that it seems to be OK.

Not sure what price range you're looking for, but I recently put a Celeron 900 and a generic slotket
into my old Abit BX-Rev2. The whole upgrade came to about $70/shipped. I got my celeron at
Newegg, and the Slotket from some Yahoo-based store I found on pricewatch. Nice speed bump
for the price.

Will the power supply need to be up graded to?
If hes running a P2 now,you think that the present PS is enough,I have no idea what it is.

I would wait-and-see on the power supply. AMDs are the real pigs when it comes to power.
Also, although everyone likes to talk about 300watts, the real key is the current that can
be delivered to the 3.3 rail.

See if the old one works, if not, then you can see about upgrading.
The little microATX computers that use Celerons sometimes only
use cheap 150watt supplies.

Ok guys and gals I got the Slot converter card and CPU and fan.
Any tips before I throw it on the MB?
I got an MSI CPU Converter board #MS-6905 (I actually got two,they sent me an extra by mistake free of charge!)also have a Celeron 1000/128/100 CPU,and cooler master heatsink/fan.
This is going on the above mentioned MB.
Thanks.
Anyone need a CPU converter board?I have an extra.;)

Install the CPU and fan on the bench. Use the pre-applied thermal pad if its got it, otherwise apply a thin layer of thermal grease on the CPU core when installing heatsink. When its all assembled, installation is same as installing a slot 1 processor. By the way DO NOT push down by its heatsink.

You'll probably need to adjust the setting manually.
FSB=100MHz
x'plier=10x

and in case you are given these options:

PCI=1/3
AGP=2/3

Make sure you have the 6905 rev 2.3. the older ones dont properly support Coppermine. Cuple more things:
Flash the mobo to the latest BIOS.
Pre set the bios for the 1 G CPU with the old one still in.
100 FSB
10x
1.75 Vcore
AGP 2/3
PCI 1/3
Then Save, shutdown and put the new CPU in, boot up.

Good luck!

Given that most BX motherboards have clock multipliers of 8.0 max, how do you run a 900 Mhz Celeron which is multiplier locked at 9 on it, even with a slotket?
