I have a P800, and the fan on the CPU is really loud and really gets on my nerves. Is there a relatively inexpensive way to reduce the sound? Could I prehaps put just a heatsink on it?

I pulled a P700 Slot 1 CPU from an old Compaq, and all it hand on it was a heatsink, no fan. Would it be safe to just take the heatsink off of the P700 and switch it with the heatsink/fan combo on my P800. Or is it a pretty good possibility i might fry the P800?

I don't really have much experience in cooling related stuff and what can be done, etc. so please feel free to enlighten me. Thanks in advance.

It's tough to actually damage a p3 with heat, provided you're running stock voltages and speeds. They just stop when overheated, and will boot right up when restarted. At least, that's been my experience...

You'll need some thermal paste, too, even the ratshack variety is ok- spread a thin layer between the clean processor and the sink- install, try it- if you start getting lockups or bluescreens, you have a problem...

The nice thing about slot 1 processors is that it's easy to make sure the contact with the sink good...

Nexfan is one of a few outfits that still sell slot1 sinks, although they might be just as oud as what you've got...
