Neither of you two gave anyone here any information with which to work (hardware, drivers, when it started, etc.), however I do know of one thing that caused this for a high number of nVidia users. In some earlier versions of the WinXP drivers, I think it was 20.xx-22.xx maybe (don't remember exactly), they would load a service called nVidia Driver Helper which would prolong and/or prevent shutdown. You can disable that in services or update to a later driver (23.xx+) and it should fix it if that is what is causing your shutdown issues.

Well, here's the problem. It shuts real fast after i installed it (with all the updated drivers and stuff) but lately it has been shutting down slower and slower.

Epox 8k7a w/ 1.2 amd athlon
Kyro 2 prophet 4500 (ew this causes a lot of 3dfx errors on my computer... on 1 game only)
SB Live!
a 40gb 7200 rpm WD caviar
a 60gb 7200 rpm WD (caviar?)
24x10x40 Plextor CDRW
16x DVD drive (toshiba i think)
a crap networking card....

i'm think its mostly software clutter or something. Anyway i can clean up the registry or some such? I used to do it a lot in 98 but i dunno how to do it in xp

Well, obviously it's not nVidia driver problems you're having. I suppose it could be clutter, but I've not noticed that happening on my install yet. Another thing it could be is simply certain processes/programs taking their sweet time to close out. Go check out this article here. It will tell you how to change your time out values, set it for something a bit lower and see if the close program dialog box starts popping up. At least then it might give you an idea of just what is slowing the process. If it's a non-MS related item there may be a patch/newer version of the software which would function more efficiently under XP.

What can take some time during shutdown is clearing the pagefile. Here is a register setting to switch off the clearing of the pagefile:

"ClearPageFileAtShutdown"=dword:00000000
-----------------------------------------------

Copy the text between the lines, past it to notepad and save it as clearpagefile_off.reg. In Explorer goto the reg file and double click on it. After a reboot the setting is active. A faster boot will be yours (if clearing the page file was the problem). To switch it on again make another reg file with almost the same content. Only difference will be dword:00000001 instead of dword:00000000. Safe it as clearpagefile_on.reg.
