Slockett And Its Effects

Hey guys,

I need to make a decision. And I need your help.

I really like the Asus P3V4X motherboard, so I'm pretty much set on that. The only thing is in order for me to get this and have a p3 733EB, I'd have to buy a the flip chip (socket 370) kind, since that is the only one this company offers.

My question - does doing the socket to slot 1 conversion (w/ a slockett) have any adverse effects on the performance of the chip? The guy assures me it doesn't, but I figure you'd be better to ask.

Also, I could get the p3 667EB variety that comes in slot 1 for cheaper, but I wanted to get something 700+. Is there a significant difference between a 667EB and a 733EB? I have been told there is.

Why dont you consider the Asus CUSL2? Its socket 370 so you dont have to buy slocket.

Anyway, using slocket will not degrade performance or statbility, as long as it's brand name and high quality.

You shouldn't have any problems as long as you get a name brand one. Either the Asus S370-133 or the MSI 6905 Master slotket will do. Stay away from the generic slotkets.

The Asus CUSL2 isn't out yet, at least not that I've seen, and I'd like to buy it this week.

The slocket I'd be gettin is made by Asus, so that's good to hear.

What about the perfomance differences between the 667EB and 733EB... worth an extra $70 I think (overall)??

If you're getting a slocket, I highly recommend the Iwill Slocket II.

A. I haven't seen a direct comparison, but a 733 should be about 5 to 10% faster than a 667, typically.


B. As far as the slotket goes:

1. Get the CPU in FC-PGA format because it is more versatile. It fits either a Socket 370 or a Slot 1 board with a slotket.

2. Performance should be the same.

3. Get the same brand slotket as your mobo and/or do what Big Brother says:

4. Don't get the Iwill Slocket II - get the newer replacement, the Iwill Slocket III, if you must get an Iwill. Do what Intel says; it's their processor and they ought to know.

Why are you looking at the 'B' cpu's ?? These cpu's are not good overclockers (they are overclocked by Intel). At any given speed, the 133 FSB doesn't offer much over its 100 mhz counterpart. A 550, 600 or 650 with 100 FSB will overclock to 133 in most cases.

DaddyG - I'm mainly looking at the B chips for the 133mhz fsb becuase the motherboard i'm buying (Asus P3V4X) also has a 133fsb and i'd like to take advantage of it.

also, i'm not an experienced overclocker and don't really want to get involved in that

Ulysses so, do you think it is worth gettin the 733 over the 667?

Ulysses: Slocket III isnt out yet, and SlocketII is just fine if you dont need the integrated VRM, pretty much useless since the P3V4X already supported a variety of voltages.

Get an Asus CUV4X, it is the p3v4x with a s370 socket instead of a Slot 1.

Also, 66MHz isn't gonna kill you, how big of a price difference is it between the two processors? If it is 75 then go for the 666...errr 667. If it is less than 40 or so go 733.

BTW, overclocking is quite easy, I'd recommend a P3 600e for even cheaper then simply putting it to a 133MHz FSB and calling it a day...800MHz CPU for less than that 667 you were mentioning. You may wanna get a Golden Orb just to keep it really cool instead of the stock heatsink and fan though.
