Slllooww USR modem :(

I got a new USR 56K V.92 56K Modem (model 5699b) the other day for a new system I built. I'm now starting to regret buying this. I can not get it to connect higher than 28Kpbs!! It's very annoying. I've used different telephone cords and different drivers - window's default driver and USR's driver, and still ... slow performance.

Any ideas on how to speed this modem up? Or is it just a worthless piece of crap? I don't really want to shell out more money for another modem yet, so please, if you have any ideas for speed improvement reply! Any initilization strings or other drivers I could try?

(Note, I swapped this modem with a friends. I can connect at around 45Kbps with his modem using the same telephone jack, so I don't think the telephone jack or line noise should have anything to do with it).

It may still be line noise that is causing the slow down. Some modems are much more sensitive to line noise. I had a cheapo LT WinModem that connected at 50,333 consistently and replaced it with a USR v.92 when they first came out and the USR (which I assumed HAD to be better) only connected at 40 something in the same PCI slot in the same comp, with everything else being the same. I took the comp into the basement and connected directly to the tap and it connected at 53,333 everytime.

Try the USR site and see if there is an updated driver or flash for your new modem and give that a shot before getting a replacement.

Make sure to check with your isp whether or not they support v.92 or even some older isps support kflex56.

Remember, some ISPs use different phone numbers for different types of modems. So be sure you are using a phone number that supports v.90 at least (very few ISPs have v.92 support as yet but everyone supports v.90). Usually when one modem can get a good connection speed and another can't using the same phone line, it is a matter of duelling protocols (particularly when the low rate is 33.6 or 28.8). The main protocols are v.90, k56flex (rockwell/conexant), X2 (USR) and v.92 (in order of popularity). So call or e-mail your ISP's tech support and make sure you are using a dial-up number that supports v.90 as I said above.
