Welp, got in my SLK-800 today :)

I'm currently using a Volcano 6cu+ with a 5000rpm 60mm fan on it. I also think I put a little bit too much AS3 on the core.

I'll be putting an 80mm 50cfm Sunon on and I'll let you all know the drop in temperature.

I'll probably then test it with an 80mm 32cfm (or 38, forget which it is) fan and see which is better for temperature versus noise.

man, no contest. anything's better than volcano. I bought a 6+ from frys awhile ago, and man did it suck.

congrats on your new hsf, it kicks butt.

Oh definitely, no contest between the two. I'm just curious as to how much better it'll run :p

Be my luck my heat goes up by 1c ;)

Unfortunately, I think I spent 30 on mine.

I was looking around for parts for my new computer and went with an AMD specified one without doing all that much research into heat sinks and fans.

hi,
SLK-800, no contest.
i have one with silent YS-Tech 80mm(20dBa 27CFM) on it. cools great. and overclocks well, even with a silent fan.

Guys, I know it's a no contest situation ;)

~~~~~
The results are in!
Volcano 6cu+ (60mm 5000rpm fan) -> 54-57c (61-63 under load)
SLK-800 (80mm 50cfm fan) -> 41c (44 under load)
Yeah!!!
I lapped the heat sink a little bit, though the best I could find on a Sunday at 7am was Home Depot with their 600 grit.
This is the first time I've lapped a heat sink. I started with 320 grit, then 400 grit, then to 600 grit. I'm wondering though if I could have done better had I cleaned the sandpaper off more. Dunno.
Hell, I don't even know if the AS3 has had time to set in. I expect it to lower in temp in a few days maybe.
I'm pleased :)
..and the fan is quiet enough too, that I can't hear it inside the case.
On the SLK-800, do you have the fan blowing on the cooler and CPU. Or you you pulling the air away from the cooler and CPU?
Yeah, heh. To say the least, I'm very impressed <grins>
I have the fan blowing air onto the heat sink.
I also swapped the 50cfm fan with I think a 38cfm and the only performance loss I noticed was a few more degrees of heat under load.
Seems like the HS is what does all the work here.
