SLK-800 and TT Smart Fan running hot

I just can't figure why an SLK-800 is running hotter than a Volcano 11 on the exact same system. What am I doing differently or wrong?

I started with a Volcano 11+ which comes with a Smart Fan II. It has a nice controller you mount in a PCI slot and then you can turn it up and down when you need to. Temps were 31 case, 34 CPU. Running F@H temps were 34 and 38.

Then I got an SLK-800 and an original Smart Fan. I ordered a SF II and an SK-7 but they were out of both and so we made a deal.

I take off the Volcano, clean everything, apply AS3, mount the SLK-800 backwards, fix it, and then first try the SF2 from the Volcano. Now the fanbus doesn't work, and I notice my temps slowly rising. However, the fan is running full blast.

I shut it down, take everything apart, clean again, apply less AS3 this time (had too much at first I think) and this time mount the original Smart Fan, plugging the yellow wire into the mobo at the "cpu fan" plug and use a 3 to 4 pin adapter to plug the fan into the PSU. Is this correct? TINFM (there is no f***ing manual).

Case 32 CPU 40 :(

Any ideas what I am doing wrong? 40C isn't the end of the world, but my cpu temp should have dropped, not gone up.

Contrary to what the specs on the Thermaltake site say, the SF II does indeed run substantially faster at full speed than the SF, or at least there is no way to force the SF to run at full speed.

I monkeyed around with the fanbus and fixed it (I had bent one of the leads).

Now I have the SF II running full blast and temps are 32 and 35C. With that thing and 4 LED fans running on the desktop right next to me, I keep waiting for flames to shoot out from the bottom as it lifts off :D The whole desk is vibrating.

Oh well, top of the day to ya :)
