SLK-800(A) and XP 2800+ Barton questions

I am buying some things soon. Some things were damaged in a storm and to replace the motherboard and CPU i'm buying a 2800+ Athlon XP (Barton) on an Abit NF7-S (which will most likely be Rev 2.0). My CPU wasn't damaged but I am getting a new one anyways. Should I use the SLK-800A and my existing 80mm fan from my Volcano 9? Would it make a difference if I bought a Panaflo 80mm fan?

I might get the Smart Fan II if that isn't the same thing. I would really like the Thermal capabilities again...they were very nice. If someone knows a good 80mm fan out there where it fits the speed adjuster on a 3.5" bay, please let me know!

I am under the impression that this SLK-800A is the best choice, but I *think* it doesn't include a manual for install and I heard it was a tricky installation. Is this true?

The SLK800A is a clip on heatsink, the SLK800U uses the holes around the socket to mount the heatsink and it doesn't come with instructions. If you want to try, you can mount a 92mm fan on your SLK800 and in that case you should try the Zalman 2 speed 92mm fan which is quiet and cools well.

i would get the slk800A iif you dont move around your rig too much cuz the SLK800U is a pain in the @$$ if you take you heatsink off often. the installation on the slk800A is not complicated at all, it is done in the same manner than all other AMD HSF are installed

Well you didn't have to tell me what the differences were. I do research you know :p

I won't be taking my heatsink off at all, shady06. I am getting the NF7-S Rev 2.0 but I don't really want to mess with the mounting holes. I haven't seen a review that proves getting the 800U or 900U will be any huge difference in temperatures. I understand that the 800A has no bundled instructions but like you said, that clip is easy. I used the clip on my massive Volcano 9 HSF...I know I won't have troubles getting the 800A in there.

I, however, do not want a 92mm fan on my CPU. My buddy has an 80mm fan on his and his 2800+ is under 116 F all the time. I might get a Smart Fan II for it unless I can find an adjustable fan that enables me to put the knob on a 3.5" slot, because I do not want to have to reach around my case to adjust the speed. I haven't seen other thermal ones...course I haven't done much looking for it until now. My first choice would be one that increases or decreases based on the temperature.

Thanks! It is just that the U is more of a pain to get in? :p
Shady, what do you think about a fan choice? I'm looking for an 80mm fan that is adjustable...however I know that if I want it in the range of 100-115 F (the CPU), I don't need a super powerful fan to accomplish it. Several reviews showed this...and I don't want a Vantec Tornado in my case.

I have checked out the Panaflo's and such like that but haven't made a decision. I am leaning towards a Smart Fan II because they tend to work so well. I will keep looking for external fan adjusters though.

yeah, i use a smart fan II and honestly, at 4600 rpm it is quite loud BUT quite useful during the summer when temps here in Los Angeles are always in the mid 90's, during cooler times, you can run it @ 2500 rpms and it still displaces a good amount of air and it's not loud at all. panaflos are good fans as well, but they cant push as much as the the Smart Fans when you need them too

Alright i'll buy a Smart Case Fan II...is it worth it to put the thermal diode under the CPU (like my Volcano 9)? Should I use the manual method instead? I really liked that fan on the Volcano9...on my old 1800+ overclocked to 2000+, the thermal control kept it under 118 F on days when it was around 90-95 degrees outside.

I kinda wish I could find something that I know could keep the PC under 120 F that didn't cost me $50 total for it. I will keep looking, though, and hope to find something.

Ah I see. Well I was thinking of manually controlling it this time...since it probably won't be varying in speed much.

You can fit a 92mm fan on the 800 slk? If thats the case I would get the Zalman 92 instead of the 80mm Smart Fan 2. How exactly do you fit a 92mm fan on the 800 slk?

I doubt you can. Even if you could, however, I wouldn't get the Zalman 92. You may need that extensive cooling capabilities, but I do not.

Okay people, I don't need any more advice. I am unsubscribing myself from this post so you can stop responding now:p

I purchased the stuff needed, which included an Abit NF7-S, SLK-800A and a 2500+ Barton. I figure that, with that Smart Fan II on it, it will cool it so well that I won't have problems bumping it up to 2800+ at all. Thanks for the advice, shady06! (was the only guy I was mainly responding to)

you can fit a 92mm fan if you twist to clips a little bit. anyway, make sure not to plug your SFII directly into the mobo as it will fry it in a matter of minutes. plug it straight into a molex connector from the PSU
