Slipstreaming XP SP2

Search function seems to be currently hosed, so I am asking what is, in all likelihood, an already tackled issue. Googling is yielding lots of questions with no answers.

I can't seem to make a fully functional XP install disc with SP2 slipstreamed. All the instructions are followed to a tee (Dump disc contents to local disk, extract SP2 network intaller files to local disk, update XP dump with SP2 dump, extract boot img from disc, set correct Nero settings, burn). The disc is bootable and everything seems ok, until the reboot where the installation continues. As soon as the graphic interface comes up, I am prompted to "Please insert Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD". What would cause this since I am getting all confirmations along the way that the SP2 integration was successful?

EDIT: Does it change anything if I'm using a Volume License disc? My label is WXPVOL_EN.

I use nlite to slipstream SP2 and all the latter hotfixes into an ISO and then burn it. I've never had any problems so far.

Here's a short tutorial on how to do it.

Make sure you are Selecting the Burn Image Option in Nero ... Autostreamer will save the new file as either a .bin or .iso
not sure which .. after it is saved burn it as an ISO Image with Nero

What do you mean by that?

You can either do the one-step /integrate option and point to the dumped CD, or you can do the 2-step /x to extract and update command to update. I tried both and got the same results.

I was actually trying to avoid using third party tools, which I've read can inadvertently make changes to the default registry settings of systems installed with the resulting discs. I know the manual process must work so I'm trying to stick to that, but may try this if all else fails.

I have slipstreamed a VL disk (no updated media for our MSDN) before without issues (manually, btw).

tbh, I would just use NLite, I have done manual before, and I think the nlite method works fine, and is easier.

you have to modify a couple of files to let it know this is an XP w/SP2 disk...sif files iirc, been a while.

I think your problem has to do with the burn itself. I would have Nero verify the burn as a first step.

It may be a media problem or, your burner itself. This is exactly how I discovered that my burner was not working properly. Everything looked and checked OK, but I could not install XP without a ton of errors. After much troubleshooting, I tried an old burner I had in the closet and all was well.

Tried on 2 different burners (one a brand new DVD burner) with two different media brands, same results....

...but the problem is now resolved.

I had no reason to suspect the READING optical drive on the install system would be bad, but it was. I was banging my head against the wall picking apart the CD build when it was a hardware issue So now I have like 17 XP SP2 discs, all working 100% with the manual slipstream. :)

MAKE SURE THE TARGET SYSTEM'S OPTICAL DRIVE IS GOOD!
