I think the answer is no. The perfectly smooth escalator is essentially just a really really tall perfectly smooth staircase. The problem is that the spring is going to lose some energy and stop eventually.

You might wanna rethink that.

Well, I guess it would happen when the store closes and they turn the power off to the escalator.
