Let's say I put a slinky on an escalator, do you think it could work and keep going for a long time?

Yeah, that's what I was thinking, anyway to make up for it?

Yep, correct:

Maybe a longer slinky is needed?

Maybe if you stacked two of them together somehow...

Hmmm... that's not a bad idea, I'd probably try 1 1/2 slinkies but cutting the second one in half, I'd also have to make sure they're connected smoothly

The damn thing would wind up falling, rolling sideways, etc and just tumbling down faster than the rate of ascent of the chain and wind up at the lower landing.

It's a boring exercise. I have another idea. Find an electric train overpass. Thow the slinky so it crosses the feeders. Cheap fireworks and unexpected train stop. Don't really do this btw.

I'm sure there are ways we can alter that, do you have any suggestions?

you'd just have to experiment, or write a program that could simulate it for you :)

There's plenty of ways to alter it but that would be cheating.

The stiffness is the slinky rings causes it to fall about twice the diameter of the slinky away from it's starting location. I'd guess the best bet would be to find a larger diamter slinky, since most escalator steps are pretty deep.
