Slingbox vs. GPS

I don't really travel around too much outside of my city, and I already have Google Maps so I can look things up if need be - but still, GPS is something that can come in handy on my smartphone. Though, a Slingbox does sound nice for when I'm being dragged around shopping, or over at someone's house who wants to watch the evening sitcoms I have no interest in while a games on, or setting up a DVR recording I forgot about.

Which one would you go for?

Edit: Added Poll.

I would definitely go for the slingbox. I have one hooked up to my comcast cable, and it streams perfectly. It is probably the coolest thing I have added to my blackjack, besides the nes modulator. 3G coverage is not as widespread as I would like it to be, but even so, streaming on edge really didn't drop the fps that much. Absolutely go for the slingbox.

GPS. How useful is watching videos when you're bored? How useful is having directions when you're lost?

I have both and I need both.
Okay okay..maybe I have too many GPS. And I still continue to test all these GPS and Review them at Gpspassion.com

But I can't live w/out SlingBox. I have one installed at my brother's place oversea, and I get to watch oversea TV show everyday. (yes, everyday) :)

how much bandwith does it take on both ends? I have friends in japan that would probably do this as long as it doesn't take all their speed!

My brother has 2m u/l and I am getting between 600 to 700Kbps. (640X480 resolution)
Extremely clear from this side of the world.

There are 4 setting, mainly Full speed, good (400~500kbps), average (300~400), limited (<300kbps)

Depend on you setting, it will display resolution from max 640X480 to 320X240.
Sound can also be adjust from "stereo" to "mono".

man...we are hijacking this thread. Sorry.

with sling is it like, you have to watch whatever the person watching tv is watching?

Yeah totally hijacked..

But again...GPS>TV. I travel a lot on the road and I don't have a GPS system, MAN do I want one. I've decided to buy an Sprint Touch on sunday so hopefully when the updates come out it will have it!

Nope, you get to watch whatever you want to watch.
YOU do not need PC for your slingbox!
Two cable to run slingbox.
1. Cable TV cable from the wall to your slingbox.
2. Cat5 cable from the router to your slingbox.

GPS from phone? You kidding right? You pay for it every time you use, and you don't get to browse the map or add your "special" place and more.

Slingbox is badass. You can be watching cable, digi cable, satellite, dvr, tivo... right on your phone(1 month trial, $30 for the software), any computer you download the software too(which is free!), all while having that same source on watching something else. The quality is far better than I expected. Go read about all of it at Slingbox.

Hijacked no longer
:D

do you have a cable/sat box or is it analog cable?

its extremely hard to control the slingbox from a mobile phone if you have a cable box

Really, how come? I haven't used my comcast box hooked up to it yet, and I was actually wondering how using the on screen guide would work. Do you know?

I have a cable box ... and I think what he's referring to is you can only use the on screen remote. Wonder if they've made it to where you can assign keys?

I don't think the phones are as good as the devices. Device are much more user friendly and accurate. I'm actually looking at the new TomTom ONE XL-S myself (with text-to-speech). I would take another look at the in car devices. The phone/pda's can be such a pain.
