Should I pick up the Slingbox or LocationFree? I think I am more interested in ease of use. The Sony looks better and they are just about the same price. Software wise, which one wins though.

ORb is a free app to watch TV shows over the internet with. I love it! I just got it to stream my TV to my tmobile MDA. Now all i need to do is figure out how to get it to change the channels.

When they come out with one that supports HD, then I'll think about getting one.

I'm assuming you mean HD recording and not HD streaming. I also pick ORB.

i've had a slingbox for a few months now and couldnt be happier. Its hooked up to my SA HD8300HD and i can watch not only live shows, but also all my recorded programs as well. As a bonus, the box plays back all my HD content in SD via S-Video, so even my HD programs are watchable across the stream.

I know in winamp when I open a stream the playlist loads a list of streams, 1 for each seperate channel, I would imagine its same in pocket windows media player?

Yeah it does have a seperate channel, but I need to hook up the IR thingie so it can change the channels on my cable box. right now i just have it on one channel, and no matter what channel i change it to on my cell phone, i cant change the channel on the cable box back at my house.

I'm also interested. I have a cousin in Spain that would love to take advantage of US TV.

I have the location free and love it since i can watch it on my PSP. The picture quality is good over a network, but isnt real wonderful over the internet. I have never used a slingbox so i cant compare the two, but if you want something for home use, i would recommend location free, but probably not for over the net use as the picture quality really takes a dive.

As long as both of you have a broadband connection, then it should be fine.

I would use it over a wireless network though...so that may limit the quality. I am not really sure.

Orb won't work for me because the only cable connection at my place is in my living room and I don't want to hookup a comp there with a TV tuner. I actually don't have a cable hookup in my room, that is why I need the slingbox/locationfree.

Your cable comp shoudl be willing to run a new lien for you. If the yneed some coaxing...upgrade your service for a month, and when they come out there to set it up, have em run a new line, then cancel the added service after that month. Bingo problem solved. Then you throw in a tuner into your comp and add orb or another free streaming software.

Also, DynDns.org is your friend

TimeWarner won't run cable, they contract it out.

Odd. cause I have time warner, and everytime I get new service (broadband....internet telephone...) they've run new cables for free.

The reviews at Amazon seem to uniformly favor the Slingbox. I can't find many online reviews of the Sony LF-PK1 (which seems to be the LocationFree, minus the monitor), but based on what I've seen I think I'd save a few bucks and go for the Slingbox.

Works great on my MDA too. Also, if you have Sirius or XM (or an XM free trial account), there are sites that will arrange your streaming channels into a PDA-friendly webpage for you to stream from. I find myself using miniXM (I forget what they're calling it now) almost more than my music through Orb.

Not only would they not run cables for me, but they said they only contract it out and that it would probably be $100-$150 depending on where exactly I wanted them run to in my place. He gave me a card for a company that does it. I was so taken back I called up Time Warner to double check because I assume they would run cable for me. Nope :(
