Went with my wife with full intentions on doing an Elantra Limited that comes with leather, but they are in rather short supply of the white and after noticing that we can get a Sonata GLS (base) for the same final cost we checked it out and decided on one (plenty of whites). But the sticking point for my wife was the leather. We noticed another GLS in the showroom had leather put on it for their MSRP of $2k (sales tactic win). This is what we decided to do and negotiated the price. There is also a $500 rebate for financing with them (we will just pay it off at 1st month). According to truecar and Edmund's TMV, the MSRP was 22695 for a GLS (cloth seats) and the market avg (what people actually pay) is 21806. I caught them throwing the $500 rebate in with the negotiating prices rather than taking it out at the end, but since I didn't want to pay the full $2k for the leather, I let it go. In the end, we're paying 22200 for everything including that leather. Yes, the MSRP on that job was $2k, but they basically took my rebate money.

All said, we are paying $900 more ($500 rebate and $400 above the market avg) for this GLS - which comes out to only $500 below MSRP, but they are wrapping front and rear seats in leather. Would you be pissed about this whole rebate thing being pocketed? I feel like we got an ok deal, but could've done better. My wife was the one who said ok we'll take the 22200 when I was working on 22000. Yes I know what you're going to say about bringing the wife, but this is her car and her money. Ugh, just feel like I was cheated. We're also going to upgrade the wheels from the 16s and we could've used that extra money.

We have $1k deposit down... half of me wants a do-over. Tell me that leather wrap job costs a lot.

Seems like you paid $394 more than average for a $2,000 dealer option. Doesn't seem like a bad deal to me. Annoying that they included the $500 rebate they way they did though.

^ the "market avg" I stated does not consider customer incentives like rebates though so it would be another $500 lower. They had other $500 rebates like if you had another hyundai in the family, or have a trade, or are military so you could stack a lot I believe.

With that considered you're still only paying ~$900 for a $2,000 option, i.e. saving 55% of the cost of the leather.

And that $500 is merely 2% of the cost of the vehicle, I don't think that's such a big deal in the grand scheme of things, especially if you really like the car otherwise. It'll get lost in the noise of the cost of ownership over the life of the vehicle I think.

The wife strikes again :(

See that sucks man... EMOTION DRIVEN.

EDIT - PS i would never buy any car that doesnt come out of factory like the condition they sold it for. IE - if sold in Leather, you get leather, if sold in cloth, you get cloth. Not If sold in cloth you get some "installer" wrap leather around the seat.

I would find a car to your exact specification and buy one otherwise you will regret the purchase until you get rid of the car.

What I would like car buying to be like:

20000 * (1 + sales tax rate) = Final price

What car buying actually ends up being:

(20000 + 500 + 995 - 500 + 650) * (1 + sales tax rate) = Final price

The more random figures they can include, the more they can squeeze those extra dimes out of your pockets by hiding this here and that there.

All in all, you did fine. Just sucks that they try to squeeze numbers here and there to make it work in their favor.

Don't forget about tags, title, licensing, and Doc fee included as well. It's crazy how quick a $22k car can eat up rebates and a down payment. I'd be much happier if they quoted the actual out the door price with different interest rates / down payments.

The more confusion the better for these salesman. My fiance just got a 2013 Elantra Limited with leather, nav, bluetooth, rear view camera, the works. It was around $22k plus the $2k "Tech" package. They gave her 4.9% financing. She recently hit $20k off of a lottery scratcher at the local supermarket so meh, it's her money lol.

40 mpg highway is pretty nice.

Happened to my father when we bought his new Camry.

The price over the internet was lower than in person, when we came in person they said it was due to all the rebates and discounts a person could be eligible for. We were able to get 1500 off of the 2000 originally posted and then talk the car down a few hundred. I still think we did well for a brand new car as it was just like 600 over invoice and the car had just been out for 4 months.

nice... did the gov't take a large chunk though?

This is California! Hell yes they take a large chunk!

Hell, they'd take a chunk if you found it on the ground.......probably before you could even pick it up!!! :)

Don't sweat the dealer. A few bucks here or there ain't worth the stress. (and believe me, I know). Just allow yourself to be a little more anal about the leather. If it ain't perfect, tell 'em to do it again!! Har har.

I know that feeling, it sucks. You didn't get a steal. But at the same time, you didn't get f'ed either; you got an alright deal. They say you can't win em all right? At least you didn't lose.

It looks as though it's an okay price IF it's a 2013 but if it's a 2012 your dealer better knock off at least $3000 more.

^ it's definitely not cheap covers that look like that from what we saw in the showroom - we had no idea they were covers when we got in the car and asked why that GLS had leather seats - which is when he pointed out the $2k addendum to the sticker.

Katzkins are better than those and they MSRP near $2k I found out yesterday. I'm not sure if that's what they're using, but in the showroom car we weren't able to tell it was a wrap. Had leather stitching and everything.

Oh and yes it's a '13.

I thought I saw somewhere that CA doesn't tax lottery winnings? Or I guess a scratcher isn't considered lottery winnings?
