i got it for the white faceplate myself, but want to note that using the oem nero that comes with this drive renders other non-sony-branded dvdrw drives as only rippers/readers within nero.
(the oem nero that comes with mad dog dvdrw and also microadvantage dvdrw do not)

I already have Nero 7 Ultra installed, so this shouldn't be a problem. Most ppl. probably already have burning software as well.

"Most ppl. probably already have burning software as well."

yes. that is the problem, correct
me do not want to monkey with the registry further by uninstalling sony's nero and reinstalling the previous version to be able to burn with both drives
to be fair, must admit that the version of nero that comes with this drive is the best far
and also mention that the supply channels for the benq 1640 are drying up due to benq's imminent release of their new drives, which are not necessarily better

Oh, you're saying you already installed the Nero that came with the drive and then realized the problem. Gotcha, I'm a little slow today :D

no, its my fault for not explaining correctly
step 1: had been using nero 6 on machine for over a year
step 2: installed sony drive
step 3: sony nero says "you have nero installed on this computer. you must uninstall it first to use this version of nero"
step 4: said okay, clicked button, nero was uninstalled, sony oem nero was installed.
step 5: now cannot burn with nero on nec nd-1100a.
have to use ez cd or record now instead, etc.
hope this clarifies things a bit

I have had this drive for about a few weeks, very decent drive I also got the rebate last week, so they do honor it. I used the black faceplate since it matched with the case I have.

I know it's a great drive from reading through the review on it as well as hearing a lot of good things about it.

I bought one for $50 shipped and no tax from Newegg not too long ago. I did a few disc quality tests and it's about 10-20 points lower than my Plextor 708-A with the same media. It does better on dual layer, though I can't compare it to my old drive because it wasn't DL compatible.

One disappointment was that when I installed it into my Coolermaster external Firewire/USB 2.0 enclosure, I couldn't get it to work with Firewire. It only works with USB. When I hooked it up via Firewire, the drive appeared dead. I thought that it was DOA at first because it wouldn't even power up. I tried calling Sony about it and naturally got the "we don't support that" response. I guess I can live with USB 2.0, especially for the price. Just a thought in case you're looking to buy this drive for an external enclosure.
