Slight Rant: Incredibly lame argument with roommate

I'm a freshman in college. He's a sophomore. The "argument" centers around locking the door to our room.

In general, I'm pretty cautious about my stuff, because I don't have much money to replace it after paying my portion of tuition, getting room furnishings, and getting school books and such.

I always lock the door when I'm out of the room. I do this for the obvious reason. I don't want my stuff to get stolen. So, the source of this argument comes from him not wanting to take his keys when he leaves, especially to go to the shower. So far, he's been locked out of the room four times because he left, I left and locked the door and he came back. Every time this happens, the next time I see him I know I'm in for an insane rant. This rant is not insane because of anger involved, but the arguments he uses are pretty fvcking stupid:
"It's a lose/lose situation for me"
"I"m a sophomore" (wtf?)
"My friends don't drag their key around"
"If they took anything, they'd take my laptop"
"It just doesn't make sense"
"You should know I'm going out for a shower"
"What's your obsession with locking the room?"

We just hashed it out a few minutes ago, with him conceding that he'll think about maybe bringing the keys to the shower (exact words). I don't know why this is so hard for this kid.

Done.

Is it normal to lock your door at your college? At my college, it was not. Paranoid freshmen usually did for about 3 weeks before they figured out how retarded it was. But then there was very little theft at my college.

ditto

And, within a few weeks, most of the students on the floor had bonded enough that you knew you really didn't have to worry too much... if something got stolen, *someone* on your floor would tell you who took it.

I can't recall ever taking my keys to the shower in college. And, almost everyone left their keys behind as well (this set up some great practical jokes with reversing the locks on the door and hiding their keys)

When I lived in the dorms it was always customary to leave your door open when you were home and available. So your friends could come in and hang out and leave or whatever. But if you leave you lock up your sh!t. Only a fool would leave alll his possessions unlocked and unsupervised. We had laptops printers a tv in our room, to hell if I'm gonna get my expensive stuff stolen from me. He must be a unresponsible spoiled rich boy that doesn't get the concept of taking care of his stuff.

It's normal when you're not in your dorm. Theft on a college campus is the most common crime in the area. We knew people who got their stuff stolen because they left their door open for one 1hour class.

When I was a junior at my alma mater, I lived in a dorm with about 50 others, on a quiet edge of campus. There was this huge DLP television in the lobby recreation area, that was used quite often. Campus police made their rounds in 30 minute stints around campus.

One morning, I woke up to the strangest thing. I'd lived in this dorm for the better part of a year, and I look outside my window. There is this pickup truck sitting right outside. Some crazy fool had just driven onto campus, backed up his truck up the four steps, propped open a door and using only his own power, hauled the TV out the door and rolled it into the back of the truck. I called campus police while watching them to let em know, then hauled my ass down there to....do something. The guy drove away as soon as I got to the lobby.

Moral: Theft happens.

Yeah, we had all that stuff too, but it was never stolen. The way it was at your college is not necessarily true everywhere else, so don't make assumptions about the guy's roommate quite yet. :)

I was in the dorms as a frosh just 3 years ago (i'm a youngin) but here's my expirience

1) It is best to lock your door. theft happens, not locking your door is just asking for it.

but this really only applied for when you were the last guy to leave the room. If my roommate was in the shower, i wouldn't lock the door, just close it. I assume he'd get out of the shower before anyone could get away with all our stuff. Plus our floor was quite well bonded and we trusted each other to go "hey, wtf are you taking (insert name here)'s stuff for?"

Being Careful? Good. But I dont think one has to be so paranoid that they have to lock their door to take a shower... or lock the door while their roommate showered.

Yeah, I go to a pretty huge university, a state school in IL. This is not a place where theft never happens, or anything. I just don't see the sense in leaving the door unlocked with my laptop, mp3 player, many many dvds, and other possessions in the room.

My roommate has a problem with my locking the door too. He hates having to take out his keys when he comes back from the gym. I don't know. I personally think you should lock your doors. That's what they are there for. I think it's common sense.

Your roommate sounds like a spoiled little rich boy who doesn't realize the value of money. Tell him to actually work and pay for himself if he wants to make such a stupid argument.

If he went to the shower and you left to class I wouldn't lock the door on him, you're just being a paranoid freshmen and I'd kick you in the nads knowningly that he went to the shower and normally you don't take everything with you.

I always had my dorm room wide-open though, it welcomed people and I got to see any ass that passed by.

Of course you should always LOCK your door when no one is going to be inside it or near it (shower or downstairs, etc).

Stop being a dick.

My fcking roommate always did this too. Worst thing about him was that he never went to class (literally - never went to class, just partied for a year and then got kicked out) so I knew that he was nearby, but I wasn't about to leave my sh!t unlocked. Theft from freshman dorms was one of the most common crimes on my campus!

Eventually I just told him - school policy says keep your key on your person at all times and lock your door when you leave your room, so I'm just always going to lock the door when I leave, no matter where you are or whether you have your key, so if you want to be able to get back in, either never leave the room, or take your effing key with you.

He eventually got the point, but by then it was almost time for him to go anyway.

Yup.

His reasons are stupid as hell, but there's nothing you're going to say that's going to change his mind, so give up on that right now. Just say "look, I'm locking the door whenever I leave... agree with it or not, you'll take your keys if you want back in."

Bottom line, end of story, go have a coke and a smile.

Your roommate is retarded. He's trying to pull rank on you by saying, "I'm a sophomore".

Always lock your door if no one is there. Your floor may be very relaxed and 'safe' but it's your stuff you won't be getting back if someone decides to steal 'just this one time'.
