sli vs crossfire (and 3 crossfire) question

not sure how to call out tri-crossfire but in any case. i understand sli and crossfire. Is the only advantage or reason to have 3 radeons is for say, a multimonitor set up? sli/cf for 2 monitors or 1 big one. I just came across the reference today about that and not seeing any benchmarks for 3 vs 1.
I understand the load and heat.. must be alot.

just wondering.
