SLI mobo other uses?

I'm planning on getting a SLI mobo in a week or so, A8N-SLI Deluxe (should i wait and get a different board?), my real question is: Since i'm planning on getting one card at a time, could i use the other sli slot for other uses or is it strictly for SLI use?

I believe it can be used as a PCIe 1x slot when set to non-SLI.
