SLI mobo & 1x video + 1x PCI-E 4X raid card

is it realy possible to use a SLI board's second connector to install a PCI-E 4X
raid controller ore G-lan it would be a nice test to see if its working
it should acording to de PCI-E spec
and if so
then it would open up also the possibility that they can make cheap server
boards whit these chip sets

example
1x PCI-E 4X whit a 16X connector for VGA card
3x PCI-E 4X for raid controllers ore other 4X cards
legacy PCI for other cards

from what i undersdand of the PCI-E standard this would be posible becouse every PCI-E lane is independed and cards can use more ore less lanes if avaliball
and think ti would be nice to see if this works

The problem with that is that you would need a 8x PCI-E RAID card.

nope thats the nice thing about PCI-E you dont
and the raid card is just a example could also b a G-lan card ore what ever

PCI-E is a serial protocal and every line is independed, ore more line's can work as group

its like a high way lets say on every lane (pci-e 1x)you can have 100 cars a min.
if you have a high way whit 4 lane's (pci-e 4x) and that high way connect's to a 8 lane higway you will still transport 400 cars a min. going over that road and you take the extra road's out of use
so the max speed you have is lowest Nr of lanes you have available
dosent mater on whiths side, board ore card

in theory you could split the the slot a extra time and have 2 PCI-E 4X slots

a PCI-E 1X card should work in a PCI-E 32X, its a bit of waste but it should work
and also the other way around, as long as the card fit's the slot it should work in theory

I think what you are wondering is sort of like what THG did to setup their benchmarking in this article(Plugged in a 1X,2X,4X, or 8X card into a 16X or 8X slot):

yeah i have read that articall
but its not why i wroth this post i wondering if some have tryed it
ore is willing to do so becous i dont have 500 dollar raid cards laying around here 🙂

just curious and it would also b intresting if anandtech would wright a articall a bout it
